While I get used to having a blog I’m reminded of someone saying somewhere (can’t remember where I saw it) that the internet tends to amplify our character traits – those of us who are introverted become more so, and those of us who are more social do that. What does being introverted/social mean on the internet I wonder? For me the internet has expanded my understanding of community – brought home when one of the Anecdote boys (was it Shawn or Mark?) said that Skype provides an instant community – linking us in real time to others who are also on-line. Even without contacting them I can feel a sense of connection. Is that introverted or social? Maybe the internet and web provide alternative ways of being in community. I’m looking forward to building community around this blog – which brings me to the real point of this post. Blogs (and bloggers) that are lively and interesting have something to say – often. I’ve always been in awe of people who can just talk (talk to the proverbial fence post) – always have something to say. If I have nothing to say, I say nothing. I’m comfortable with silence. But I’m also aware that silence on a blog leads to boredom. Hmmm….this will be something I’ll have to explore further when I actually have something to say about it!
